BET's Rap City which ran from August 11, 1989 to October 26, 2008 is the longest running hip hop music video show on cable television that aired on the B.E.T. (Black Entertainment TV) network. It's original host was comedian Chris Thomas. The TV music video program was a showcase for hip hop music vids which resonated with many hardcore rap fans and special interviews, live in studio performances, and exclusive freestyles from leading-edge hip-hop stars, and oftentimes had guest radio personalities serve as co-hosts. "Rap City," was considered to some extent edgier than its adversary, "Yo! MTV Raps."
